The Canons Partnership, a group comprising local community organisations* and Merton Council, is formulating a detailed bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for up to £4 million to spend on the Canons area of Mitcham.
Money already received from HLF is being used to prepare detailed plans and run community events for local people to contribute ideas. If successful, the Canons Partnership will carry out a programme of restoration at The Canons in keeping with the historical significance of the site, and events and activities for the community.
A detailed bid will be made to HLF in 2016.
*the community organisations in the Canons Partnership are: Friends of the Canons, Mitcham Cricket Green Community & Heritage and the Mitcham Society.
- The Canons is in the Cricket Green Conservation Area. The Conservation Area was designated in 1969, the first in Merton
- The Canons has many historic sporting associations including a running track used by Olympic athletes for training (for example Dorothy Tyler who was Britain’s first individual Olympic medallist in women’s athletics – getting a silver medal for the high jump in the 1936 Olympics)
- The Canons is a Grade II* listed mansion which dates back to 1680. It is on a site with a history dating back to the 11th century and the Canons of Bayeux Abbey and includes a carp pond and Grade II listed 16th century dovecote.
